We will be needing adult volunteers to help prepare for our Spring Showcase on Tuesday, April 26. We will be hanging art work that morning from 9 a.m. until we're finished. After several weeks of illness and a long hospital stay, I'm back to work at the middle school. I worked a half day yesterday and today (Dec. 22). It feels wonderful to be back with our staff and your students. I will again start updating activities and information on the WMS Happenings site.

It is a Christmas when I appreciate more than ever my life's many blessings. The best gift I could receive was returning to a job I love. I wish each of you a safe holiday break. I hope you get to spend time with those close to you. I look forward to returning full time in January. Students will return on Tuesday, January 5.

Parent Advisory met September 2

SPAC, the middle school parent advisory group, met on Wednesday, September 2. The group discussed the upcoming homecoming festivities. KiYi is held September 18, and the middle school entry will be a camouflaged boat and a hunting theme. We are playing the Aberdeen Eagles. Students will cut out lettering during directed study times. SPAC members will meet at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 16 to attach lettering to the boat. Mrs. Weber also showed the group the volunteer binder. A list of all parents who indicated areas they would help has been typed and ready for staff.

Val Bauer has agreed to chair the SPAC group for this year. Her willingness to head things up is very appreciated.

The next monthly SPAC meeting will be Wednesday, October 7 from 11:53 to 12:30. We invite all parents of seventh and eighth graders to attend. If you have any questions, feel free to call Nancy Weber at 882-6370.

It's hard to believe we are in August, and the school year is quickly approaching. Each fall parent and student volunteers help the WMS staff by preparing folders for our back to school nights. This year we plan to stuff folders on Monday morning, August 17 at 9 a.m. Depending on the number of volunteers, we usually finish up within two hours.

DC Trip Information for Seventh Graders

This is a reminder that any 7th grade student wishing to take part in the early registration program for next year's Washington DC/NYC Trip, has until June 8th to do so. The deadline was extended 1 week because there has been a real flurry of registrations and they want to make sure that everyone that registers will get in by the deadline. Remember that all those registering are eligible for the drawing for twelve-$300 scholarships given just to Watertown students! This drawing will be held Sunday, June 28th at 7:00 pm in the middle school. You need not be present to win. Winners will be notified with a call within a couple of days of the drawing. I can't believe we are already approaching the end of the school year. I always struggle with endings. First as a teacher, and now as assistant principal, there has always been a sadness that settles in for me each spring. I'm excited for students and the bright future that lies ahead for them. At the same time, I miss sharing their day to day lives. The balance for me comes with the list of new incoming seventh graders. I read through the names with excitement and anticipation wondering about new faces and personalities.

I always tell my students... "Once you're "my kid," you're my kid forever. I will continue to rejoice with your students as they travel over the high school. I look forward to another year with next year's eighth graders.

Spring Showcase to be held May 5

Tales of Terror from Nightmare High School

The Watertown Middle School play "Tales of Terror from Nightmare High School" will be presented to the public on Thursday, April 30, 7 p.m. in the D.D. Miller Auditorium. It will be presented to students on Friday, May 1 at 9 a.m. Middle school students are encouraged to wait for the Friday performance.

Inservice / Early Dismissal April 29

Eighth grade Cyclone students will participate in mock interviews that morning for language arts class. Dakota STEP Tests Start March 30th

WMS students will begin taking the Dakota State Test of Educational Progress from March 30th to April 9th. Eighth grade students will take tests in reading, math, and science. Seventh grade will take tests in reading and math. Please remind your child or children that attendance is very important during this testing time. Sixth Grade Students Invade WMS

WMS students will have the opportunity to volunteer at the Shrine Circus on April 11th. They will be selling popcorn, snow cones, or cotton candy. Students volunteer to work one of three shows; 10am, 2pm, and 6pm. Last year we had over 120 volunteers! We ask that students check with their parents about their volunteer commitment because the circus is during the four day Easter holiday. Please contact Mr. Buechler at 882-6370 for more information.

How blessed we are to live in South Dakota! We can have blizzard warnings, tornado warnings and flood warnings all at the same time. :) Hope you all enjoyed spring break with your families.

Upcoming Dates To Remember:
April 3 Tsunami Dance 6:30 to 9:00 and Parent Forum 6:30 to 7:30. The forum will be about social networking (My Space, Facebook, Bebo, etc). There will be door prizes and bonus points given for most classes. More information will be sent to parents.

April 10 Good Friday.... no school.

April 13 Easter Monday ... no school.

April 27 & 28 Sixth Grade Tours at the middle school during school hours.

April 29 Inservice day 12:30 dismissal

April 30 Watertown Middle School play 7 p.m. @ DD Miller Auditorium

May 1 Play presented to middle school students.

May 4 Middle school volunteers serve the Watertown Banquet. Middle school parent volunteers help hang artwork for Spring Showcase.

May 5 Spring Showcase 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Parents and students are invited to view student artwork and hear performances by the Show Choir, Jazz Band and Orchestra.

May 7 Orchestra Concert @ WMS Gym

Optimist Essay Contest Winners Announced

Optimist Essay Winners Are Announced

The Watertown Optimist’s Club announced winners in the annual essay contest at an evening event on February 17. The winners were presented with a monetary award. Each were also given an opportunity to donate to a charity of their choice. The overall winner was Sarah Larson. She won $75 and gave $75 to the Salvation Army.

Other winners and their respective charities were: Eighth Grade: 1st Darin VerDouw $50, (Codington County Cares $50); 2nd Catrina West $50 (Make A Wish $40); 3rd Shayniah Dahle $40 (Juvenile Diabetest $35); 4th Audra Kjetland $40 (Salvation Army $30); 5th Erica Endres $30 (Special Olympics $25); 6th Ashton Foust $30 (Watertown Education Foundation $20). Seventh: 1st Sabrina Schram $50 (Salvation Army $50); 2nd Erica Thyen $50 (Make A Wish $40); 3rd Baily Lear $40 (American Cancer Society $35); 4th Erin Briggs $40 (Women’s Resource Center $30); 5th Logan Kludt $30 (Humane Society $25); 6th Kirsten Hanson $30 (Women’s Resource Center $20).
This year’s prompt was “The Power of Youth”. Larson’s essay will now be entered in an international competition, where she will compete for scholarship dollars.

DANCE & PARENT FORUM -- NOTE CHANGE IN DATE!!

There will be a WMS dance from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20. This is a change in date due to a conflict with another school function. A parent forum "Being Mean Without Being Seen" (on cyberbullying) will be held the same evening beginning at 6:30 in Casa 4. The speaker will be Sergeant Tim Toomey of the Watertown Police Dept. Attend and you will help your child gain 5 bonus points for one class! (2nd or 3rd trimester—teacher’s option) (Exceptions: 2 pts. in Mrs. Carson’s class, none in FACS, & 3rd trimester for Mr. Jacobson).

The WMS staff would like to extend a special thank you to all parents who have helped with conference meals and staff appreciation treats this year. The past two evening meals were wonderful, as were the meals for November conferences.

Conferences were well attended. If you were unable to keep your scheduled conference time, and want to reschedule, please call your child's advisor. You are also invited and encouraged to attend team meetings when you have concerns or want to share information. If you do not know your team meeting time, please call the middle school at 882-6370.

SPAC - SCHOOL, PARENTS & COMMUNITY

Our parent advisory group, SPAC, meets the first Wednesday of every month. February's meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 4 at 11:53 a.m. We are done by 12:30. We meet in the room behind Mrs. Weber's office in CASA 4. All middle school parents are invited to attend meetings.

Watertown High School to Hold Information Night

The Watertown High School will be having an informational night for parents of 8th grade students. The event will be on January 30th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at D.D. Miller Auditorium. This is a great opportunity for parents to ask questions and receive valuable information about their child's transition to the high school. Call the WHS student services office at 882-6323 for more information.

The WMS student senate have created four "boards" to display information and announcements. There is one by the east doors as you enter, one in the pit, and one by each of the north water fountains. Each have a bright red border. Check them out next time you visit the building.

Parent Teacher Conferences to be held Feb 2 & 3

Parent / teacher conferences are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Feb 2 and 3, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. This conference will be student led, so it is important that your student attends with you. Students previously brought home a sheet for parents to indicate times that would work best. Teachers then sent home the appointment time for the conference. If you do not know your conference time, feel free to call Nancy Keever at the middle school 882-6370.

Our school counselor, Jason Buechler, will be on hand if you need to talk to him. Principal Dan Albertsen and Assistant Principal Nancy Weber will also be available.
